Books in the Barn
Books in the Barn is an enriching program offered at SMILES where clients of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to read to the horses. In this calming environment, participants can sit by the stalls while sharing their favorite stories with their equine companions. The presence of the horse creates a peaceful and supportive atmosphere, encouraging clients to practice reading skills and build confidence without judgement. The horse's quiet attentiveness provides a soothing backdrop, helping readers relax and enjoy reading in a unique and meaningful way!

Who can participate?
Books in the Barn is offered to individuals with physical, cognitive, sensory, and learning disabilities. All participants must be at least four years old.
What to expect!
- Participants may bring a book of their choice or choose a book from the SMILES library. If participants choose a SMILES library book, they are allowed to keep that book as long as they would like!
- Each participant is assigned to one of the SMILES horses, and they will be able to learn about the horse before beginning to read.
- Participants will learn how to greet the horse, and will "meet and greet" the horse that they will be reading to.
- Participants will have 20-25 minutes of dedicated reading time. Chairs are set up outside the horse's stall for the reader's comfort.
- A parent or caregiver is allowed to go back with the participant if needed, however, we keep the horse barn as quiet as possible. Visitors will be invited back at the end to see how the participant is doing and take pictures if they would like. We aim to create a safe, quiet, non-judgmental environment for the readers.
- When the reading time has ended, participants are allowed to give their horse a treat!
