Dr. Ashley Slater grew up in rural Oklahoma on a farm with horses and beef cattle. She started showing horses in the English discipline and continues to ride horses for pleasure to this day. Dr. Slater studied Animal Science at the University of Arkansas. She received her D.V.M. from Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences in 2018. She then went on to complete a one year rotating equine internship in surgery, internal medicine, and sports medicine at Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals in Salado, Texas. Dr. Slater has been a large animal veterinarian with Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic since 2019. Dr. Slater joined the SMILES board in 2024 and currently serves in the Secretary position. She provides her expertise and guidance for the overall health and management of the horse herd.
